During the week of October 14, through October 20, 2024, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 17 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Seven of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident, while two of the drivers were under the age of 21.
So far in 2024, there have been 787 DUI arrests compared with 780 during the same period last year, an increase of 0.90 percent.
The Hawai‘i County Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 787 major crashes thus far in 2024, compared with 675 during the same time last year, an increase of 16.6 percent.
As of Sunday, October 20, there were 22 fatal crashes, resulting in 24 fatalities, compared with 13 fatal crashes, resulting in 14 fatalities for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 69.2 percent for fatal crashes and 71.4 percent for fatalities.
