Results for this year’s primary election include a run-off between incumbent Mayor Mitch Roth and Dr. Kimo Alameda in the race for Hawaiʻi County Mayor.
Mayor Roth received 36.5 percent of the votes while Dr. Alameda received 26.7.
Any candidate who was able to secure more than 50% of the vote in the mayoral or council primaries would be elected outright. In races where no candidate was able to reach the 50% mark, the top two vote-getters will advance to a runoff in general election on November 5.
Two of the nine Hawai‘i County Council seats are also headed for a runoff. Those include Council members Cindy Evans and Matt Kaneali‘i-Kleinfelder who will meet challengers in the general election.
In other primary results, Hilo Councilwoman Jennifer Kagiwada won the District 2 reelection outright.
Councilman Holeka Inaba won reelection in his race with Caryl Burns.
Council Chair Heather Kimball won reelection in District 1.
