During the week of March 11 through March 17, 2024, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 13 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident while three of the drivers were under the age of 21.
So far in 2024, there have been 197 DUI arrests compared with 224 during the same period last year, a decrease of 12.1 percent.
The Hawaiʻi County Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 205 major crashes thus far in 2024, compared with 200 during the same time in 2023, an increase of 2.5 percent.
To date, there were eight fatal crashes, resulting in eight fatalities, compared with four fatal crashes, resulting in five fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths) for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 100 percent for fatal crashes and 60 percent for fatalities.
