During the week of October 24 through October 30, 2022, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 18 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident and none were under the age of 21.
Thus far in 2022, there have been 820 DUI arrests compared with 895 during the same period in 2021, a decrease of 8.4 percent.
There have been 682 major accidents so far this year compared with 671 during the same period last year, an increase of 1.6 percent.
To date, there were 30 fatal crashes (one fatal crash reclassified on 05/30/22 due to a medical condition) resulting in 32 fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths, and one reclassified due to a medical condition), compared with 22 fatal crashes, resulting in 22 fatalities for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 36.4 percent for fatal crashes, and 45.5 percent for fatalities.
