During the week of October 10 through October 16, 2022, Hawai’i Island police arrested 24 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident while two of the drivers were under the age of 21.
Thus far in 2022 there have been 788 DUI arrests compared with 837 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5.9 percent.
There have been 656 major accidents so far in 2022 compared with 635 during the same period in 2021, an increase of 3.3 percent.
To date, there were 28 fatal crashes (one fatal crash reclassified on 05/30/22 due to a medical condition) resulting in 30 fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths, and one reclassified due to a medical condition), compared with 20 fatal crashes, resulting in 20 fatalities for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 40 percent for fatal crashes, and 50 percent for fatalities.
