Hawai‘i Island police are investigating a fatal traffic collision that occurred yesterday near Kanoelehua Avenue and East Kawili Street in Hilo
Police determined that a 2019 Honda motorcycle traveling south on Kanoelehua rear-ended a 1997 Toyota Tacoma that was stopped at a red traffic light at the East Kawili Street intersection.
The motorcyclist, who was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, was unresponsive at the scene and transported to Hilo Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead. He remains unidentified pending positive ID and notification of his next of kin.
An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death
The 32 year-0ld driver of the Toyota Tacoma was not injured during the collision.
Police have determined that speed and the motorcyclist not wearing a helmet are the two primary factors in the outcome of this collision. Further investigation will be conducted to determine any additional information.
The East Hawaiʻi Traffic Enforcement Unit has initiated a coroner’s inquest investigation, which is pending.
