On Saturday, May 7, Waiakea defeated Baldwin 3-2 in the 2022 Division I final of the First Hawaiian Bank /HHSAA Baseball State Championships at Iron Maehara Stadium in Wailuku, Maui. This is the second state baseball championship for Waiakea High School.
During the game, which was watched by over 1400 attendees, Baldwin’s Wehiwa Aloy scored a run in the top of the fourth, and Laʻakea Ko scored a run in the seventh inning. All three of Waiakea’s runs were made in the bottom of the fifth when Waiakea senior Kedren Kinzie drove in the go-ahead runs with a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the fifth inning and Kyson Wada induced a fly ball to right with the tying run on second in the top of the seventh to complete the win.
This was the first state baseball tournament since 2019, as both the 2020 and 2021 tournaments were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
