During the week of March 14, 2022, through March 20, 2022, Hawaiʻi County police arrested 15 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One of the drivers was under the age of 21.
So far in 2022, there have been 250 DUI arrests compared with 281 during the same period in 2021, a decrease of 11.03 percent.
There have been 158 major accidents so far in 2022 compared with 167 during the same period in 2021, a decrease of 5.4 percent.
To date, there were 8 fatal crashes, resulting in 10 fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths), compared with 6 fatal crashes, resulting in 6 fatalities for the same time last year. This represents is an increase of 33.3 percent for fatal crashes, and 66.7 percent for fatalities.
