During the week of October 4, 2021, through October 10, 2021, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 18 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Seven of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. Two of the drivers were under the age of 21.
So far in 2021, there have been 826 DUI arrests compared with 748 during the same period in 2020, an increase of 10.4 percent.
There have also been 616 major accidents so far in 2021 compared with 594 during the same period in 2020, an increase of 3.7 percent.
To date, there were 20 fatal crashes compared with 13 fatal crashes during the same time last year, an increase of 53.8 percent.
