In the past 14 days, there were 179 new cases on the Big Island. The State Department of Health no longer releases information about how many active cases there actually are, and says the new case count in the last 14 days is an “approximation.” However, the cases diagnosed in the past 14 days do not count those hospitalized or at home with symptoms for longer than 14 days.
In Monday’s meeting of the State House Select Committee on COVID-19, House Speaker Scott Saiki said he has asked Gov. David Ige to issue a clear, simple mask mandate for the state. Although Gov. Ige’s previous proclamations have a mask mandate, Speaker Saiki noted it’s a bit unclear. He said he asked the Gov. to issue what is essentially a two-sentence mandate–that everybody must wear a mask in public, and that the counties will be responsible for enforcement. He said the House can deal with penalties when it reconvenes in January.
