Yesterday, the Hawaii State Department of Health reported a doubling of patients “released from isolation,” from around 5,000 the day before, to around 10,000. On Friday, the active case count was 6,397. On Saturday, the active case count was 1,761. The total state case count as of yesterday was 12,018.
The State DOH included a footnote in yesterday’s report, explaining why the number of active cases has dropped markedly on Saturday, by close to 5,000:
“The Department of Health has been focused on redesigning procedures to maximize effectiveness of COVID-19 case investigation and contact tracing including making a variety of changes to data systems allowing them to be more automated, and to improve timeliness of data entry and validation. Isolation release data completeness was the focus of recent efforts, resulting in a substantial increase in the number of COVID-19 cases currently reported as released from isolation, from 5,397 to 10126.”
The state says 131 people have passed away because of complications of COVID-19, but that only includes 15 of the Big Island’s 28 deaths.
The Big Island has a cumulative count of 693 cases. The number of active cases on the island is now only 91, with that number being the total number of cases (693) minus those released from isolation (574) minus the actual known deaths (28). State DOH reported the island has 9 “probable” cases.
Hilo Medical Center reported on both Friday and Saturday, it had 15 COVID-19-positive patients. Saturday at 5 p.m., Judy Donovan of Kona Community Hospital confirmed the facility has 2 patients with COVID-19, one of whom is on a ventilator.
