If you want an appointment to get a Driver’s License this Saturday, you need to go to Waimea. Steve Hunt, Deputy Finance Director, advised that Waimea is the only location with appointments for Saturday, Sept. 26. All appointments for Kona, Hilo, Pahoa, and Ka’u are filled.
Appointments may be made at https://vehicleregistrationlicensing.as.me/driverlicense
Hunt acknowledged that the online process is cumbersome, in that once one goes to the site, it’s necessary to search under each individual service representative for a possible appointment, rather than just request an appointment for the next available staff member.
In an email, Hunt said “Because we were in a rush to migrate our DL and MVR appointments to an online reservation system for social distancing, we did not have time to develop this system in-house but rather chose a pre-packaged system with limited opportunities for customization. Both cost and the urgency to implement were factors in that decision. I’m not sure if we can customize this off-the-shelf system to take out the available customer service representatives from the appointment availability equation, especially since the system accounts for the estimated time to process each type of transaction and the availability of each staff member.”
No walk-ins will be accepted.
Face coverings must be worn, and customers must adhere to the recommended 6-foot social distancing at all times. Only those customers receiving services will be allowed inside the lobby, but minors or those needing additional assistance may have one additional person accompany them, if needed. Obviously, anybody who is sick or still subject to the 14-day quarantine should not come to any county locations.
