The State Department of Health’s noon report: there are 271 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the state, bringing the cumulative count to 9,473 . The number of active cases is 6,537.
The deaths attributed to COVID-19 in the state: 81, a plus 2 from yesterday. Although almost everybody who died is said to have had one or more underlying conditions, in general those people would not have passed away unless they contracted COVID-19, as the underlying conditions (obesity, diabetes, COPD, other lung disease as examples) would not likely have taken their lives, but they did make it hard for the body to fight off the infection. Hawaii Island had at least one death reported today, of another veteran from the Yukio Okutsu Veterans Home.
Hawaii Island’s new cases: 34 The total number of cases on the island as of today: 469 The number of active cases is at least 255. Although the State Health noon report, below, shows Hawaii Island with 3 deaths, there are 6 deaths reported for Hawaii Island, all men who resided at the Yukio Okutsu Veterans Home. Nineteen people have required hospitalization on the island. Later today, Hilo Medical Center will provide an update on the number of patients it has.
In the last 28 days, according to the State Department of Health’s map, Hilo–zip code 96720–has had more than 150 new cases of COVID-19. The map below, from the State Department of Health web site, shows that anyplace in white has had zero new cases in the last 28 days, yellow areas have had 1 to 25 new cases, the goldenrod (lower Puna) indicates 26 to 50 new cases, and the red, more than 150 new cases.
Yesterday Kona Community Hospital confirmed there are at least 8 cases known in Miloli’i. Although State Senator Kai Kahele has called for the Mayor to isolate and block off Miloli’i, Mayor Kim has said no. What he is doing is setting up testing in Miloli’i on Saturday, for any resident who wishes. He also said many of the people who were at gatherings in Miloli’i were not residents of the area.
Kaua’i again has no new cases, and the cumulative case count remains at 57. Maui County has a cumulative case count of 347, with 5 new cases. O’ahu has 236 new cases, and a total of 8,575 cases.
