The Hawaii Island Food Basket, the island’s only food bank, will provide bags of food today for anybody who needs it at Cooper Center in Volcano starting at 10 a.m. Tomorrow, there will be a food drop at Kona’s Kekuaokalani Gym, starting at 10 a.m. Friday, there will be a food distribution at Honokaa Sports Complex and Skate Park, starting at 10 a.m. The food distribution events will continue until noon or until the food supply is depleted.
Food Basket Director Kristin Frost Albrecht welcomes anybody, even if this is their first time, since many people are experiencing unemployment and food insecurity for the first time ever. She also has expressed appreciation to all the foundations and individuals who have the means and are donating money to help their neighbors via hawaiifoodbasket.org
Those needing food are asked to drive in and stay in their vehicle and volunteers will put the food in the back seat or trunk, so one of those areas should be clear to receive the food. The Hawaii National Guard, the Hawaii County Police Department and the State Sheriffs, and numerous community volunteers assist at these events.
