Governor David Ige in his Thursday afternoon press conference said he will be extending the 14-day quarantine for off-island travelers beyond June 30. He did not provide additional detail.
He said he plans to open up interisland travel sooner, and plans to make an announcement within a few days. He spoke during a Facebook live discussion with the four county Mayors. He and the Mayors said they are willing to reopen travel between the islands but with precautions in place.
They all said no matter what, people must wear masks and continue to stay at least 6 feet away from others.
Lt. Governor Dr. Josh Green said at a morning discussion with Ryan Tsuji and Yunji DeNies live-streamed by the Honolulu Star Advertiser that he believes we need to reopen interisland travel as soon as possible in early June, with international and mainland travel in early July.
He wants travelers coming in from out of state to have a COVID-19 test 3 days in advance of boarding the plane and has talked with CVS, which does such testing at their mainland stores. He said CVS tells him they have capability to do such tests. He said that would be helpful in helping the traveler potentiallyhave a shorter quarantine and in helping the state monitor COVID-19. Green has also spoken of such tests being voluntary, with the incentive being that travelers who have the test and it’s negative can have a shorter quarantine.
In the Governor’s press conference, Maui Mayor Mike Victorino said he believes COVID-19 new cases will probably come in from out of state. He said he wants testing before they leave their destination, in advance of them coming to the state and supports L.G. Green’s thinking in this area. He added that he believes the airlines would find that useful, as well.
