On Thursday morning, Hawaii County Mayor said the number of positive cases of COVID-19 on the Big Island is now 81.  As of Wednesday at noon, the State Department of Health and Hawaii County were both reporting 79 cases.  There are now at least 5 active cases on the island.

Mayor Kim said the lesson is that the novel coronavirus which causes COVID-19 spreads easily.  Wearing a mask and physically distancing from others, and proper hand-washing and surface cleaning is critical to slowing and stopping the spread of COVID-19,

Mayor Kim said all the recent cases in the last week are within a family or its contacts.  The State Department of Health publishes a map that shows the location of all the cases, plus the location of new cases within the past 28 days.  This map indicates new cases in the past month are in Kailua-Kona through South Kohala and over into Waimea, and in Hilo.   County Civil Defense Administrator Talmadge Magno on Thursday morning said only that the new cases are “on the Big Island.”

The State’s COVID-19 Joint Information Center spokesman said “While it is true that the two latest reported cases on Hawaii island are household contacts of a confirmed case, they are all in isolation.  Unless health authorities deem that these cases pose a risk to the greater community, they’re not going to release specific geographic data.”
