Hawaii County Department of Finance says that all expired safety check inspections will be valid through May 31, 2020. Car dealers and other businesses which do safety checks say they cannot do them right now because the County has shut down its safety check system and closed all the Vehicle Registration & Licensing offices to minimize the potential spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus within Hawaiʻi County.
An expired safety inspection will not stop the registration of a vehicle. Registrations should be renewed on time, even without a valid safety check.
Registration Renewals
There are alternative ways to renew your vehicle registration without going into the County office:
- Mail in your renewal (the County will renew your vehicle with an expired safety):
101 Pauahi Street, Suite 5
Hilo, Hawai’i 96720 - Use one of our Renewal Kiosks located at the Hilo or Kona Safeway and Waimea Foodland
- Use the online application form
Special Note: The renewal kiosks and online application will renew your vehicle with an expired safety check inspection.
The County’s Vehicle Registration and Licensing website has answers to many licensing and registration questions, plus access to forms. Click here.
Although the offices are not open, there are workers available to respond to email questions at vehiclerl@hawaiicounty.gov
