Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell and Honolulu Police Chief Susan Ballard spoke at a press briefing today and announced they are instituting a curfew this three-day Easter weekend. The curfew will begin on Friday evening. Enforcement hours will be each night between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. Friday and Saturday and Sunday, through Monday morning. Mayor Caldwell said the curfew extends to “anything with wheels” on the roads ― not only cars but moped, bicycles and even scooters.
There are exceptions to the curfew for first responders and for those going to and from work or picking up medicine.
Grocery shopping is not considered an acceptable activity during the curfew.
Police Chief Ballard said the idea is for people to stay home, and not even walk, and that law enforcement officers will be stopping any vehicle on the streets.
With the Department of Health reporting the lowest one-day total since the pandemic began, with only 7 cases, Mayor Caldwell said he wants to stop the spread further.
Elsewhere in the state, Kaua’i Mayor Derek Kawakami instituted a 9 p.m. to 5 p.m. curfew on the entire island on Friday, March 20. Kawakami has now also put a ban on all vacation rentals, since some vacation rental owners continued to encourage visitors.
Maui Mayor Mike Victorino was quite vocal in encouraging Gov. Ige to institute an interisland 14-day quarantine, which is now in effect, in addition to the 14-day quarantine for anybody coming into the state.
