Hawaiʻi County will be holding a celebration for the reopening of the sports fields at Kamakoa Nui Park during a free event at the park.

The celebration, which will start at 10 a.m on Sunday, May 4, will include a blessing, open flag football games, activities, face painting, information booths, league softball games, giveaways and refreshments.

Kamakoa Nui Park, located at 68-1839 Kamakoa Drive in Waikōloa, includes a skate park, ballfield, multi-purpose sports field, and a comfort station.

Sports fields at the park have been closed for several years after components of the park’s water supply and irrigation system failed, leading to the demise of the grassed areas of the park and rendering the sports fields unusable.

In 2023, Waikōloa Heights Land Investors reached an agreement with the County to invest approximately $1 million in private funding to restore the irrigation system and the grass turf on the fields.

The Department of Parks & Recreation is reopening the fields for use by local sports teams and the general public.
