The dramatic high fountaining phase of Kīlauea’s Halemaʻumaʻu eruption, episode 16, has concluded. After more than 23 hours of lava fountains reaching heights of 600 to 700 feet, activity at the south vent ceased at 12:03 p.m. HST today.
The eruption episode, lasting over 37 hours, significantly altered the Halemaʻumaʻu crater floor, with lava covering over 50% of the southern Kaluapele caldera. Pele’s hair and tephra were deposited in parts of Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park and along Highway 11.
