Hawaiʻi Island police arrested and charged 60-year-old Olaf Seyler, of Honolulu was arrested and charged with numerous fentanyl related drug offenses following an incident at the Hilo International Airport.
On Saturday, South Hilo patrol officers were assigned to the airport after receiving a report of a male who attempted to bring an airsoft pistol through security.
TSA reported that Seyler attempted to pass through the security line when an item appearing to be a pistol was observed through X-ray screening. While searching his carry-on, a glass smoking pipe with white powdery substances was found in addition to 27 individual one-inch Ziploc-type resealable packets containing a powdery rock-like substance. A functional digital scale, and an imitation Glock 17 airsoft pistol were also found.
Seyler was arrested for suspected narcotics possession and transported to the East Hawai’i Detention Facility where he was held for continued investigation.
A total of 24.57 net grams of fentanyl was recovered from the Ziploc-type resealable packets. According to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), as little as 2 milligrams (0.002 grams) of fentanyl can be a lethal dose. Based on this information, the fentanyl seized had the potential to result in over 12,000 lethal doses.
Following the execution of a search warrant on Seyler’s luggage, .63 grams of methamphetamine and an additional .93 grams of fentanyl were recovered.
After conferring with the County Prosecutor’s Office, Area I Vice detectives charged Seyler with the following offenses:
- First-degree Attempted Promotion of a Dangerous Drug
- Second-degree Promotion of a Dangerous Drug
- Three counts of third-degree Promotion of a Dangerous Drug
