Although Hurricane Hone passed yesterday, the National Weather Service’s flood watch and wind advisory remain in effect for Hawaiʻi island.
As of 11 p.m last night, the Central Pacific Hurricane Center said the storm had maximum sustained winds of 70 mph with higher gusts.
As Hurricane Hone caused a significant amount of wind, rain, and flood damage, multiple roads remain closed, utility lines and trees are down, and rivers and streams are at capacity. Bayfront Highway in Hilo and Highway 11 in Ka`u near the 59 Mile Marker are closed to traffic due to hazardous conditions. The public is urged to exercise caution as crews remove debris and conduct repairs on roadways.
Hele On Bus routes that were suspended over the weekend are expected resume operations this morning.
In addition, Ka‘ū High, Pāhala Elementary School, Nā‘ālehu Elementary School, Na Wai Ola Public Charter School, Connections Public Charter School and Volcano School will be closed to students and staff today due to hazardous road conditions.
