Yesterday, the Hawaiʻi County Fire Department rescued an injured hiker after a resident reported hearing someone calling for help in the forest off of Kamaili Road in Pāhoa.
After HFD drove to the scene and confirmed a person yelling in the forest, the Pāhoa fire station, Battalion 1A and rescue company 02 were dispatched to rescue them. A trail was cut through the bushes to the individual’s location determined by maintaining vocal contact.
The hiker was assessed and carried out of the forest to the awaiting medic unit. It was determined that the person fell while hiking in the bushes and injured himself. He was thought to be in the forest for 2-3 days without food or water but was found to be alert and oriented however very weak with multiple injuries.
