During the week of July 22 through July 28, 2024, Hawai`i Island police arrested 20 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Nine of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident, while four of the drivers were under the age of 21.
So far in 2024, there have been 564 DUI arrests compared with 555 during the same period last year, an increase of 1.6 percent.
The Hawaiʻi County Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 565 major crashes so far this year, compared with 486 during the same time last year, an increase of 16.3 percent.
To date, there were 18 fatal crashes, resulting in 20 fatalities (two of which had multiple deaths, one was reclassified as suicide, and one reclassified as a medical condition), compared with 9 fatal crashes, resulting in 10 fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths, and one died at a later date) for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 100 percent for fatal crashes and 100 percent for fatalities.
