During the week of July 15, through July 21, 2024, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 19 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident, while two of the drivers were under the age of 21.
So far in 2024, there have been 544 DUI arrests compared with 543 during the same period last year, an increase of 0.18 percent.
The Hawai‘i County Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 547 major crashes so far this year, compared with 467 during the same time last year, an increase of 17.1 percent.
To date, there were 18 fatal crashes, resulting in 20 fatalities, compared with 9 fatal crashes, resulting in 10 fatalities for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 100 percent for fatal crashes and 100 percent for fatalities.
