Two Hilo juveniles, one age 14, the other 15, were arrested and charged with burglary and other property offenses following incidents at both the Waiakea Elementary and Intermediate School campuses.
A family member of the 15 year old turned him in at the Hilo Police Station after identifying him from video surveillance footage posted on social media. After conferring with the Hawai’i County Prosecutors office, Area I Juvenile Aid Section detectives charged the juvenile with the following offenses:
- Second-degree burglary
- Second-degree criminal property damage
- Fourth-degree criminal property damage
- Two counts of fourth-degree theft
The juvenile was remanded to the custody of the State, and placed at the Family Intervention Services home in Hilo. The investigation is being routed to the Hawai’i County Prosecutors office and Family Court.
The 14 year-old teen was arrested after a parent brought him to Waiakea Elementary school and told the principal that the teen was the other juvenile identified in the video surveillance footage.
After conferring with the Hawai’i County Prosecutors office, Area I Juvenile Aid Section detectives charged the second juvenile was charged with the following offenses:
- Second-degree burglary
- Second-degree criminal property damage
- Fourth-degree criminal property damage
- Two counts of fourth-degree theft
In order to separate the two suspects, who were not students of either Waiakea campus, the second juvenile was released to his parent and issued a Notice to Appear in Family Court on July 23.
The charges against the teens stem from a July 17. incident in which they were observed on video surveillance breaking a glass window and entering into the Waiakea Elementary School administration office. While in the office, they removed several items and caused damage after spraying the contents of two fire extinguishers that were stolen from a shed on the Waiakea Intermediate School campus.
