During the week of July 8 through July 14, 2024, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 20 motorists for D.U.I. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident; while none of the drivers were under the age of 21.
So far in 2024, there have been 525 DUI arrests compared with 526 during the same period last year, a decrease of 0.2 percent.
The Hawaiʻi County Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 533 major crashes thus far in 2024, compared with 455 during the same time in 2023, an increase of 17.1 percent.
To date, there were 18 fatal crashes, resulting in 20 fatalities (two of which had multiple deaths and one crash was reclassified as a suicide), compared with 9 fatal crashes, resulting in 10 fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths, and one died at a later date) for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 100 percent for fatal crashes and 100 percent for fatalities.
