During the week of March 4, through March 10, 2024, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 14 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident while one of the drivers was under the age of 21.
So far in 2024, there have been 184 DUI arrests compared with 203 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9.4 percent.
The Hawaiʻi County Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 182 major crashes thus far in 2024, compared with 179 during the same time in 2023, an increase of 1.7 percent.
To date, there were seven fatal crashes, resulting in seven fatalities, compared with four fatal crashes, resulting in five fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths) for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 75 percent for fatal crashes and 40 percent for fatalities.
