During the week of February 26, through March 3, 2024, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 15 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident, while one of the drivers was under the age of 21.
So far in 2024, there have been 170 DUI arrests compared with 177 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4 percent.
The Hawai‘i County Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 156 major crashes thus far in 2024, compared with 163 during the same time last year, a decrease of 4.3 percent. To date, there have been seven fatal crashes, resulting in seven fatalities, compared with four fatal crashes, resulting in five fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths) for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 75 percent for fatal crashes and 40 percent for fatalities.
