During the week of February 5 through February 11, 2024, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 26 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident, while one of the drivers was under the age of 21.
Thus far in 2024r, there have been 124 DUI arrests compared with 127 during the same period last year, a decrease of 2.4 percent.
The Hawai‘i County Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 102 major crashes so far in 2024, compared with 112 during the same time in 2023. This represents a decrease of 8.9 percent. To date, there were five fatal crashes, resulting in five fatalities, compared with three fatal crashes, resulting in 4 fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths) for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 66.7 percent for fatal crashes and 25 percent for fatalities.
