During the week of January 29, through February 4, 2024, Hawai`i Island police arrested 20 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. while two of the drivers were under the age of 21.
Thus far in 2024, there have been 98 DUI arrests compared with 110 during the same period last year, a decrease of 11 percent.
The Hawaiʻi County Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 87 major crashes so far this year, compared with 87 during the same time last year.
To date, there were five fatal crashes, resulting in five fatalities, compared with two fatal crashes, resulting in two fatalities for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 150% for fatal crashes and 150% for fatalities.
