During the week of January 1, through January 7, 2024, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 16 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident, however none of the drivers were under the age of 21.
Thus far in 2024 there have been 16 DUI arrests compared with 26 during the same period last year, a decrease of 38.5 percent.
The Hawai‘i County Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 16 major crashes so far this year, compared with 22 during the same time last year, a decrease 27.3 percent.
To date, there was one fatal crash, resulting in one fatality, compared with zero fatal crashes (Rvsd 02/07/23: fatal crash on 01/06/23 reclassified to a medical condition), resulting in zero fatalities for the same time last year.
