20 year-old K-ret Kafoto of Captain Cook was arrested and charged in relation to a series of Hilo property crimes, including burglary and criminal trespassing.
On Wednesday afternoon, Kafoto, who was charged under two separate criminal complaints, made his initial Hilo District Court appearance where his bail was maintained at $37,000.00. He was ordered to appear for his preliminary hearings today.
As the first Complaint alleges, Kafoto was charged with Burglary in the Second Degree and Theft in the Second Degree. As the second Complaint alleges, Kafoto was charged with Burglary in the First Degree, Unauthorized Entry Into a Dwelling in the First Degree, Possession of Burglar’s Tools, and two counts of Criminal Trespass in the Second Degree. Burglary in the First Degree and Unauthorized Entry Into a Dwelling in the First Degree are both class B felony offenses which carry a penalty of either a ten-year prison term or four years probation and up to eighteen months in jail.
Burglary in the Second Degree and Theft in the Second Degree are both class C felony offenses and carry a penalty of either a five-year prison term or four years probation and up to twelve months in jail.
The charges are merely allegations and the Defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
The cases were initiated by South Hilo Patrol, while the felony investigation was handled by the Hawaiʻi County Police Department’s Crime Reduction Unit and Area I Criminal Investigation Section.
The case is being prosecuted by Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Kevin Soong.
