During the week of November 6, through November 12, 2023, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 12 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Two of the drivers were involved in a traffic collision while one of the drivers was under the age of 21.
Thus far in 2023, there have been 825 DUI arrests compared with 860 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.1 percent.
The Hawai‘i County Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 732 major collisions so far in 2023, compared with 719 during the same period last year, an increase of 1.8 percent. To date, there have been 15 fatal crashes, resulting in 16 fatalities, (one of which had multiple deaths); compared with 30 fatal crashes, resulting in 32 fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths, and one was reclassified to a medical condition) for the same time last year. This represents a decrease of 50 percent for fatal crashes, and 50 percent for fatalities.
