During the week of October 16 through October 22, 2023, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 15 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic collision, while one of the drivers was under the age of 21.
Thus far in 2023, there have been 786 DUI arrests compared with 799 during the same period last year, a decrease of 1.6 percent.
The Hawai‘i County Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 677 major collisions so far in 2023 compared with 666 during the same period last year, an increase of 1.7 percent.
To date, there have been 14 fatal crashes, resulting in 15 fatalities, (one of which had multiple deaths); compared with 28 fatal crashes, resulting in 30 fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths, and one was reclassified to a medical condition) for the same time last year. This represents a decrease of 50 percent for fatal crashes, and 50 percent for fatalities.
