During the week of October 9, through October 15, 2023, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 19 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic collision while one of the drivers was under the age of 21.
Thus far in 2023, there have been 771 DUI arrests compared with 787 during the same period last year, a decrease of 2 percent.
The Hawai’i County Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 661 major collisions so far in 2023 compared with 653 during the same period in 2022, an increase of 1.2 percent. To date, there have been 14 fatal crashes, resulting in 15 fatalities, (one of which had multiple deaths); compared with 25 fatal crashes, resulting in 27 fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths, and one was reclassified to a medical condition) for the same time last year. This represents a decrease of 44 percent for fatal crashes, and 44.4 percent for fatalities.
