Hawai’i Island police arrested and charged 30-year-old Mark Nakoa Akina, of Eden Roc, with second-degree assault and other domestic-related offenses following an August 23 incident at an Eden Roc residence.
After conferring with the Hawai’i County Prosecutors Office, Area I Juvenile Aid Section detectives charged Akina with the following offenses:
- two counts of second-degree assault
- kidnapping
- first-degree terroristic threatening
- abuse family household member
Akina’s bail was set at $82,000.
The charges against Akina stem from an incident when Hilo Patrol officers responded to Hilo Medical Center after receiving a report of a 57-year-old male who had been held captive by his son and assaulted with a knife and stick. The victim also reported being punched and kicked numerous times and threatened to be killed by the suspect.
The victim was able to escape when he defended himself by striking back. He then fled the residence to another family member’s home where he hid from Akina. He was taken to Hilo Medical Center for treatment the next day.
Area I Juvenile Aid Section detectives and Puna Patrol officers responded to the scene and arrested the victim’s son, Akina, without incident.
