During the week of July 31 through August 7, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 14 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic collision and one of the drivers arrested were under the age of 21.
Thus far in 2023, there have been 580 DUI arrests compared with 612 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5.2 percent.
The Hawai‘i County Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 507 major collisions so far in 2023 compared with 480 during the same period last year, an increase of 5.6 percent.
To date, there have been nine fatal crashes, resulting in 10 fatalities, (one of which had multiple deaths); compared with 23 fatal crashes, resulting in 25 fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths) for the same time last year. This represents a decrease of 60.9 percent for fatal crashes, and 60 percent for fatalities.
