32 year-old Wallace Manuarii Tahutini of Hilo was charged with attempted murder in relation to a July 21 incident near Bayfront Highway in Hilo.
As the Complaint alleges, Tahutini was charged with Attempted Murder in the Second
Degree (intentionally engaged in conduct, striking and/or hitting another person, which, under
the circumstances as he believed them to be, constituted a substantial step in the course of
conduct intended to culminate in his commission of the crime of Murder in the Second Degree,
said crime being intentionally or knowingly causing the death of another person). Attempted
Murder in the Second Degree carries a penalty of life imprisonment with the possibility of
parole.
The charges are merely allegations, and the Defendant is presumed innocent unless and
until proven guilty.
The case was initiated by South Hilo Patrol and the felony investigation was led by
Detective Kimo Keli‘ipa‘akaua of HPD’s Area I Criminal Investigation Section. The case is being prosecuted by Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Shannon Kagawa.
