During the week of January 16 through January 22, 2023, Hawai`i Island police arrested 23 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Six of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident while two of the drivers were under the age of 21.
Thus far in 2023, there have been 72 DUI arrests compared with 68 during the same period in 2022, an increase of 5.9 percent. There have been 58 major accidents so far in 2022 compared with 43 during the same period last year, an increase of 34.9 percent. To date, there have been three fatal crashes, resulting in three fatalities, compared with two fatal crashes, resulting in two fatalities for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 50 percent for fatal crashes and 50 percent for fatalities.
