During the week of December 12 through December 18, 2022, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 19 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident while one of the drivers was under the age of 21.
Thus far in 2022 there have been 948 DUI arrests compared with 1,037 during the same period in 2021, a decrease of 8.6 percent. There have been 812 major accidents so far in 2022 compared with 786 during the same period last year, an increase of 3.3 percent. To date, there have been 32 fatal crashes (one fatal crash reclassified on 05/30/22 due to a medical condition) resulting in 34 fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths, and one reclassified due to a medical condition), compared with 25 fatal crashes, resulting in 25 fatalities for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 28 percent for fatal crashes, and 36 percent for fatalities.
