During the week of November 21 through November 27, 2022, Hawai’i Island police arrested 16 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident and one of the drivers was under the age of 21.
So far in 2022, there have been 893 DUI arrests compared with 974 during the same period in 2021, a decrease of 8.3 percent. There have been 753 major accidents thus far in 2022 compared with 733 during the same period last year, an increase of 2.7 percent. To date, there were 31 fatal crashes (one fatal crash reclassified on 05/30/22 due to a medical condition) resulting in 33 fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths, and one reclassified due to a medical condition), compared with 25 fatal crashes, resulting in 25 fatalities for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 24 percent for fatal crashes, and 32 percent for fatalities.
