During the week of September 19 through September 25, 2022, Hawai’i Island police arrested 18 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. None were under the age of 21.
Thus far in 2022, there have been 737 DUI arrests compared with 785 during the same period in 2021, a decrease of 6.1 percent.
There have been 601 major accidents so far in 2022 compared with 584 during the same period last year, an increase of 2.9 percent.
To date, there were 25 fatal crashes (one fatal crash reclassified on 05/30/22 due to a medical condition) resulting in 27 fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths, and one reclassified due to a medical condition), compared with 18 fatal crashes, resulting in 18 fatalities for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 38.9 percent for fatal crashes, and 50 percent for fatalities.
