During the week of September 5 through September 11, 2022, Hawai’i Island police arrested 12 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Two of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident while two of the drivers were under the age of 21.
So far in 2022, there have been 697 DUI arrests compared with 755 during the same period in 2021, a decrease of 7.7 percent.
There have been 571 major accidents thus far in 2022 compared with 554 during the same period last year, an increase of 3.1 percent.
To date, there were 24 fatal crashes (one fatal crash reclassified on 05/30/22 due to a medical condition) resulting in 26 fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths, and one reclassified due to a medical condition), compared with 16 fatal crashes, resulting in 16 fatalities for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 50 percent for fatal crashes, and 62.5 percent for fatalities.
