The Vulcan Challenge 2022, which is currently running through September 19, is raising money to support UH Hilo’s student-athletes in 12 varsity sports.
For the second year in a row, KTA Super Stores and the Taniguchi ‘Ohana have pledged to match the next $25,000 in gifts dollar for dollar. KTA will match up to $1,000 to each sports program while the remaining balance will go to the UH Hilo Vulcan Athletics Fund to support the department as a whole.
“We are so thankful for the outpouring of support for the Vulcan Challenge,” Hawai’i Hilo director of athletics Patrick Guillen said in a press release. “This $25,000-matching gift from our friends at KTA Super Stores made to honor the memory of Koichi and Taniyo Taniguchi, the founders of KTA Super Stores, is incredibly humbling. Toby Taniguchi and his team at KTA are so supportive of UH Hilo and Vulcan Athletics. There really are no words that properly express our gratitude for all that they do for our students and the program. Mahalo!”
The University of Hawai’i at Hilo Vulcan Athletics has partnered with the University of Hawai’i Foundation to raise funds in support of the Vulcan athletics department and its sports programs. Last year the 90-day fundraiser brought in $223,500 from over 400 donors.
