Hawai’i Island police detectives are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred yesterday afternoon.John.Balberde@hawaiicounty.gov.
South Hilo Patrol officers responded to a report of a male party who was cutting himself with a knife on Keawe St. When responding officers arrived they gave verbal commands for him to put the knife down. When the suspect began approaching an officer, the officer drew his weapon and continued giving verbal commands which were ignored. As the suspect began approaching an officer the officer drew his weapon and struck the suspect in his lower extremities. Police and responding paramedics performed CPR before he was transported to the hospital. He is expected to make a full recovery. There were no reported injuries to bystanders or the responding officers. Detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigation Section are continuing this investigation while the Office of Professional Standards has initiated a standard internal administrative investigation. The involved officer, who is a 14-year department veteran, will be placed on administrative leave pending an internal incident review.
