As of 4pm on Sunday, August 14, the State Department of Land and Natural Resources announced the following updates on the Leilani fire which has been burning since last week.

  • The fire has affected 16,800 acres with 65% containment
  • 41 firefighters, 8 overhead personnel, 3  helicopters (2-PTA, 1-DLNR/DOFAW contracted), 6 contract bulldozers, 13 engines, water tenders, and brush trucks have been utilized.

The fire spread has slowed in sparse grass on a ‘A’a lava flow in ohia forest. Containment and control remains dependent on fire behavior, wind, and difficult terrain.

Actions planned for Monday 8/15 include continuing to create fire breaks with bulldozers to contain the fire and to continuing to secure the fire perimeter behind dozers.
