During the week of July 18, through July 24, 2022, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 22 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. 7 of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident while 3 of the drivers were under the age of 21.
Thus far in 2022, there have been 584 DUI arrests compared with 655 during the same period in 2021, a decrease of 10.8 percent.
There have been 452 major accidents so far in 2022 compared with 437 during the same period in 2021, an increase of 3.4 percent.
To date, there were 22 fatal crashes (one fatal crash reclassified on 5/30/22 due to a medical condition) resulting in 24 fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths, and one of which was reclassified due to a medical condition), compared with 13 fatal crashes, resulting in 13 fatalities for the same time last year. This represents is an increase of 69.2 percent for fatal crashes, and 84.6 percent for fatalities.
