Hawaiian Telcom reported that one of their fiber optic cables was severed on Tuesday morning.  This break in the cable affected cell phone service, traditional landline telephones, the internet, and public radio broadcasts. Telephone and cell phone communications in West Hawai‘i, including the Kona, Ka’u, and Waikoloa areas were affected.  Many customers were unable to call out on their cellphones and landlines.  The line break also impacted the public’s ability to call 9-1-1 and police stations in Kona and Ka’u.
