At approximately 4;30pm on Tuesday, HPD Police said Hawaiian Telecom had successfully repaired the fiber line and that cell and landline phone service to Hawaiʻi Island’s west side of was fully restored.
Hawaiian Telcom reported that one of their fiber optic cables was severed on Tuesday morning. This break in the cable affected cell phone service, traditional landline telephones, the internet, and public radio broadcasts. Telephone and cell phone communications in West Hawai‘i, including the Kona, Ka’u, and Waikoloa areas were affected. Many customers were unable to call out on their cellphones and landlines. The line break also impacted the public’s ability to call 9-1-1 and police stations in Kona and Ka’u.
The break location was identified and crews addressed the situation.
