Yesterday, U.S. Army firefighters from Pohakuloa Training Area responded to a 911 call after a motorist in a mini-van coasted into Gilbert Kahele Rest Area along Daniel K. Inouye Highway after smelling smoke. The mini-van experienced engine problems and ultimately caught fire. The operator and others in the area attempted to extinguish the fire with extinguishers but failed and called 911. Engine 50B from Pohakuloa Training Area responded and found the vehicle engulfed in flames, and immediately snuffed out the blaze. No one was injured.
